Mineral Intake in Dogs

Pets have a high nutritional requirement too. Most of the food they are treated on a daily basis lacks essential nutrients or minerals. Most pet owners remain unaware about the nutritional value or fail to follow the regimen.

Alike humans, dogs need their nutrients too and in a right amount. The longevity of their life is based mostly on the diet and lifestyle.

The minerals needed in only a small quantity, generally less than 20 milligram per day, is known as Trace Minerals.

5 Essential Trace Minerals for Dogs

Iron

Iron is most vital for bodily function and it helps to provide oxygen to organs and muscles. The deficiency of iron may cause poor growth and anemia in dogs. Broccoli, kale, parsley and fennel seed tends to be rich in iron.

Selenium

It is an antioxidant that helps prevent oxidative damage that can cause premature aging, cancer and inflammatory diseases. Its deficiency may cause low immunity, muscle cramping and low stress tolerance. Halibut, sardine and beef tend to provide selenium.

Zinc

Zinc boosts the immune system and the quality of your dog’s skin and fur. Its deficiency may cause fertility issues, bone and joint problems, decreased healing of wounds. Chicken, turkey, spinach, alfalfa, burdock root and catnip provides high amount of zinc.

Copper

Copper helps absorb iron, which participates in the synthesis of melanin and helps to stop anemia. Copper deficiency may cause bone and joint disease, poor coat color and ligament and tendon issues. Meat, liver, fish and whole grain tends to be rich in copper.

Manganese

Manganense is essential for bone growth and thyroid hormone production. It ensures the quality of bone and cartilage, while playing a significant role in the mitochondria function. Rabbit, egg and pumpkin seed tends to be rich in Manganese.
